Papers, 1825-1835.

The collection consists of a diary written by Samuel Sr. in New York City from 1830 to 1835, and a letterbook of Frederick Lord containing activities of his brother Samuel Jr., and a friend, Joseph K. Miller, in the period 1825 to 1827. The diary of Samuel Sr. contains frequent comments on political issues and outbreaks of war in Europe, and President Jackson's foreign and domestic policies, especially concerning the Nullification and National Bank crises. Several entries refer to daily profits, account lists, ship sailings, state and national legislative business and election returns. Frederick's letterbook, as well as his father's diary, contains references to people of note during this era along with personal comments on family members. Of special interest are detailed descriptions of New York and July 4th celebrations, Lafayette's visit to America in 1825, and life as a seaman in the early 1800s.
